For some cosplayers, cosplay is an escape from the harsh realities of life. It is in the cosplay world where everyone is friendly, repeat sex offenders can approach cute young girls with a camera, and ugly geeks turn into pop culture icons. I've seen more defective people from cosplay during my short stay of over a year than I have in my lifetime. Nobodies become somebody in cosplay; what all social rejects have to do is dress up as popular characters or shed some skin and they become instant celebrities, complete with DSLR-equipped stalkers and a healthy stable of friends on Facebook.
Take a look at this girl for example. I think the community calls her "Arinola" or something.
As a cosplayer, she may have appeal. It doesn't even matter who she portrays. As long as she gets to show off her boobies, you wouldn't think twice about ogling her desirable assets.
As an ordinary girl, though, the only time you'd look at her is when you want to remind yourself that God is good for making you one of His better creations.
